Chapter Sixteen
Autumn
I didn’t answer Ian. There was no way he’d agree to my plan. I had to separate from the group, though—so I could summon the guardian myself.
“Answer me,” he growled low. “What are you planning on doing?”
“Not out here. We’ll talk at the house,” I said. “Keep your voice down.” The last was said in a whispering hiss. The last thing I wanted to do was draw any attention to us. Not yet.
Summer and I needed to talk and come up with a plan.
The first thing, though, was to see if there was a portal to Karma that was still open. If so, the first order of business was closing it.
I needed to call Win, too. Just to give her a heads-up.
Ian didn’t say anything else, but I knew he would the minute we returned to Amber’s place. I’d have to think of something to tell him.
By the time we arrived back at Ambers, I thought I had a plan that could work. At least I hoped it would.
Once we were all seated in the spacious living room again, I spoke. “It’s been a long day. Why don’t we regroup and talk more tomorrow?”
Summer looked at me with a question in her eyes. I needed her to play along. “Summer and I haven’t seen each other in a while. I’d like to go have a good meal and spend some time with her.”
The others didn’t seem to have a problem with that plan, but Ian obviously knew I was hiding something. “What are you going to do?” he asked.
“Nothing,” I lied. “We’ll talk tomorrow. I’m sure there’s something we can do. We can make a temporary doorway to Pandemonium and speak with the guardian.” Well, it wasn’t exactly a lie. I did want to talk to the guardian. I wanted to see how to close the portal that I was sure was still very much open, too.
“It’s been a very long day,” Summer agreed. “I think going to dinner together is a great idea.”
Steele laughed. “Do you two think we all were born yesterday?”
Summer turned and gave him a wide-eyed look. “I don’t know what you mean.”
“Bullshit,” he said flatly. “You two are going to try something on your own. The first priority is keeping the babies safe, true?”
They were innocent—of course, that was true. “Yes.”
“So, the three of us are going back to my place,” Steele said.
“Make that four of us,” Ian inserted. “If you think you’re leaving me out, you’re nuts.”
“But you’re safer here, Ian,” I replied. “We’ve been over this already.”
“The only way I’m staying here is if we all stay here. I’m not leaving you two alone when lord knows what is out there,” he said roughly. “No way in hell.”
“Agreed,” Steele said.
I turned to look at the others, trying to gauge who would support my idea. It didn’t look like any of them would, if the nodding heads were any indication.
I gave in. “Look, Summer and I can contact Pandemonium.”
“We all can,” Steele said. “Or none of us will.
